Not so Fast, Fall!

Autumn colors in nature
If you’re an Autumn, it tells us that your coloring is rich, earthy and spectacular. You look good in gold tone harvest colors such as tomato red, camel, teal blue, olive green, sunset violet, terra cotta, rust, pumpkin and moss green.

Autumn vibes, summer temperatures – Let’s talk strategy! Kids are going back to school, football season is around the corner, and the stores are all in “Fall” mode. The new fall colors and fresh collections always spark a little thrill — it feels like a whole new season is waiting for you. But wearing those heavier “autumn” looks while the heat is still cranking? That excitement turns into a slow, stylish melt, so how do you transition your wardrobe from summer to fall? As a former Designer Sales Consultant for Saks Fifth Avenue and other luxury retailers, I had to lean into fall fashion even when the temperatures were still soaring into the 90’s. I figured out how to tweak my outfits just enough to give them that cozy fall vibe – without sacrificing comfort. I thought I’d share my tips with you.

Here are a few foolproof tips to help you glide from summer into fall with style (I threw in 2 for men as well):

  • Choose darker colors. Try your favorite fall colors in short-sleeved or sleeveless tops and dresses.
  • Layer lightly. A darker summer top paired with a lightweight cardigan or jacket works well when temperatures fluctuate.
  • Put away the beachy clothes. If it screams “poolside,” it’s time to give it a break until next summer.
  • Change your shoes. Trade flip-flops and very lightweight sandals for peep-toe pumps or a more substantial sandal.
  • Add some weight. Chunkier jewelry and accessories can give an outfit a more autumn feel without adding extra layers.
  • Change your handbag. A darker leather bag can make a summer outfit feel more seasonal.
  • For men, go darker with trousers. Gray, navy, and deeper khaki are great choices. Lightweight wool trousers can also be comfortable in warm weather and won’t wrinkle as easily as cotton khakis.
  • Try darker patterns. Plaids, polos, and printed shirts in deeper colors are an easy way to bring a little fall into your wardrobe.

Most importantly, don’t feel like you need to rush the season. You can enjoy your summer clothes a little longer while gradually adding fall touches.
